If “different” is just a thing.
If we all have certain features,
What does “different” bring?
People filled with hatred,
Can’t possibly see,
That there’s not really “differences”
Between you and me.
Looks can’t show “difference”,
If they’re just there to be seen.
If you don’t look like someone else,
Why are they so mean?
If being “different” is what is wrong,
I’d rather not be right.
And I’d want to finish living,
Doing the “different” fight.
This poem is a very inspiring one, and that is why I chose it. I hope that when people read this poem, they reflect upon themselves, and try not to simply “follow the crowd”, because that is the easy path to take. What the author of this poem is saying is that being different isn’t so bad. One line that I think really is the most important part of this poem is:
” If being ‘different’ is what is wrong,
I’d rather not be right. “
This line does a good job reiterating that do anything to be different. Dont be afraid. People are very critical of one another in this world, but you can’t live your life worrying about what people think of you. If you want to do something, you should do it. Life is too short to live it the way others want you to. “Doing the different fight” is a good line in this poem. The author chose to say this because to be different, you literally do have to fight with the anxietys of society and not give in. Different is something that should be looked at as positive, not negative.

I think this is a great poem! Especially for the time we are living in. Everyone is so afraid of being themselves that they follow what is “in” or “popular” at the time, even if they feel weird doing it. This is very inspiring and I like to live by this poems theme of being yourself and being different. Maybe different isn’t what is weird, maybe being different is or will one day be the “norm.” The line “if you don’t look like someone else, why are they so mean?” really gives insight and cause arrousal for questions. It is a true and straight forward question. Why are people so mean to those that look or act differently. Different doesn’t mean bad, it’s just unknown. Everyone seems so afraid of difference that it blocks their minds from accepting it or getting to know different. This in part leads to ethnocentrism and prejudice, neither of which is a healthy way to live- in my opinion.
I think you chose a great poem and that it could lead to many discussions in many different directions. I like the use of questions to begin the poem and add into the middle then in the end put a definite answer and opinion. It creates an interesting start and encourages me to read the poem, but in the end gives a strong finish.
I love this poem! It is so true in the sense that there is really no difference between people. Everyone acts like the person sitting next to them is so much better or so much worse than they are. There are so many comparisons when really there is nothing to compare. We are all people. We are all one. ‘Different’ should not be a term in our vocabulary. I also like the specific line you chose out of the ooem.
Yes! This is exactly what I took away from the poem. I think it’s crazy how people view being “different” as a bad thing. I mean if we were all the same there would be nothing to take from life, nothing that would make us each special and “life” if you could even call it that at that point, wouldn’t be worth living. One of my favorite lines was actually the one that you chose so I will choose my second line that reads:
“If you don’t look like someone else,
Why are they so mean?”.
The funny thing about this line is that it is so child-like yet so..adult at the same time because it sounds like something a child would say and yet it is a question adults, to this day, have no idea how to answer. For some reason, I feel like once we answer this question, a lot of fighting and bickering would cease. Do you agree?
